Putin's war plan hits setback as Russia loses 11,000 men in one month in Ukraine

Moscow is replenishing its forces at a similar rate to the losses they are taking, the think tank added.

The ISW continued: “These reported losses suggest that the Russian casualty rate in the Avdiivka area may be even higher given the higher operational tempo there.”

British defence officials have reported that Russia is losing so many me because of its unrelenting efforts to take Avdiivka, a key city in eastern Ukraine.

The BBC and independent Russian news outlet Mediazona have identified the names of 37,052 Russian military personnel who have died in the war in Ukraine since it began in February 2022.

Ukraine does not release figures for its losses, but a leaked US Defense Intelligence Agency assessment claimed that Kyiv has lost 124,500 to 131,000 men.

Between 15,500 to 17,500 of these were deaths.

British foreign secretary David Cameron has warned the West that ending support for Ukraine would be a “Christmas” gift” for Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, China’s president.

He said: “We should pass this money to the Ukrainians, we should back them and make sure that it’s Putin that loses — because if that money doesn’t get voted through, there are only two people that will be smiling: One of them is Vladimir Putin in Russia.

“The other one is Xi Jinping in Beijing. And I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to give either of those people a Christmas present.

“There is nothing that will drive Russia further back and put Putin more on the back foot than actually seeing that Crimea, which is legally part of Ukraine, is properly under attack from Ukrainian forces.”
