A pub-goer was furious after being hit with a huge bill for a modest round of drinks at Dublin’s iconic Temple Bar. The hefty sum totalled an astonishing €107.20 (£91.16) for one beer, one Coke, two rums, and six Baby Guinness shots.
The receipt showed a pint of Heineken at an eye-popping €11.45 (£9.74), a Coke ringing in at €4.95 (£4.21), six Baby Guinness shots at a steep €11.35 (£9.65) each, a whopping €68.10 (£57.91) in total, and two Malibu shots priced equally at €11.35 (£9.65) each, totalling €22.70 (£19.30).
A 70cl bottle of Malibu is currently on sale for just €17.50 (£14.88) at Dunnes Stores in Ireland. The receipt, dated Friday, April 4 at 2.52pm, quickly became an internet sensation after patron Ryan shared it online via his Twitter handle @Ryan_AVFCC. Ryan expressed his shock at the rapidly escalating cost for what he considered a relatively standard order.
He said: “Knew it would be expensive but f*** me”, reports the Irish Mirror.
A note at the bottom of the receipt attempted to rationalise the steep prices: “All prices include live music and cover charge.”
The pricey tab ignited a fiery discussion about the soaring costs of enjoying oneself in one of Dublin’s most bustling tourist hotspots. Numerous netizens were quick to denounce the charges, labelling them as “a rip-off”, “daylight robbery” and “unbelievable”.
One exclaimed: “Nearly £70 for 6 Baby Guinness, I’d never check my bank app again!” while another, equally shocked, added: “WTF!!?!!? Where is that? 70 quid for 6 Guinness? Hope they sprinkled some gold on top.”
The price of Heineken also caused a stir, with a patron commenting: “Pint of beer for over £11? Absolute joke.”
Another chimed in with disbelief: “Omg I would of walked out.”
Meanwhile, a different customer recounted their own pricey experience: “Dublin is brutal. Did 82 euros on four gin and tonics last year. Left my glass for one minute it was swept up by glass collector half full.”
One person even compared the cost to their weekly expenses: “More than my food shopping bill for week.” Others defended the establishment, citing its location and ambience. A supporter mentioned: “To be fair, as stated at the bottom of the receipt, prices include live music.”
Another pointed out the obvious: “You go to one of the most popular tourist bars in the world, then act shocked when it’s expensive lmao.” Another individual remarked: “It’s a tourist trap bar what the f*** do you expect.”
