Prince William was seen whispering to Princess Kate on their wedding day and one lipreader has revealed what the newlyweds were saying. The royal wedding took place on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London.
Attended by over 1900 guests, including royals, celebrities and dignitaries from around the world, the wedding was a grand event. The couple exchanged vows in a traditional ceremony and their marriage was broadcast to an estimated global audience of 22.77 million people. As the nation celebrated the day, it not only marked a new marriage but it also marked a new chapter in the monarchy, with Princess Kate becoming the Duchess of Cambridge.
According to the lip reader who analysed footage for CBS News, William can be seen to say: “I hope I remember…It’s mad, it’s mad! Oh my goodness it’s really loud here – these people are clapping.”
The Daily Mail reports that he then turns to his new wife and tells her: “You look happy”.
She smiled and told him, “Yes! Are you happy?” to which he replied, “Yes. Very!”
The couple originally met as students at St Andrews University and dated for eight years, splitting up briefly in 2007. Then in October 2010, on holiday in Kenya, they became engaged. Since 1100, only 16 royal weddings have taken place at the iconic Westminster Abbey.
The last one before Prince William and Princess Kate’s was the 1986 wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
As well as weddings, Westminster Abbey has been the setting for other iconic royal moments. It is where the Queen’s funeral was held in 2022, and where King Charles’ Coronation took place in 2023.
Like Princess Diana and King Charles before them, the newlyweds travelled along their route in the 1902 State Landau carriage.
Out on the streets of London alone, the Metropolitan Police estimated one million people turned up in person to try to catch a glimpse of the future King and Queen.
Since the wedding, the couple have welcomed their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
