Princess Kate may be a future Queen, but the 42-year-old has always made it clear that being a mum is her top priority.
While she may spend a lot of time carrying out royal duties, the princess also spends a lot of time at home with her children Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
As well as jumping on the trampoline with them, cooking for them, and encouraging them to help out around their four-bedroom cottage for pocket money, the Princess of Wales once revealed that she also spends time trying to teach her children certain qualities that she believes are just as important as “maths”.
This is part of her and Prince William’s aim to give the three children as normal an upbringing as possible before their royal duties begin, with their eldest son Prince George second-in-line to the throne.
According to The Mirror, the princess once said: “My parents taught me about the importance of qualities like kindness, respect, and honesty and I realise how central values like these have been to me throughout my life.
“That is why William and I want to teach our little children… just how important these things are as they grow up. In my view it is just as important as excelling at maths or sport.”
The princess also reportedly has a “sofa” hack when it comes to her children and the way in which to resolve conflict.
According to The Mirror, when one of their children loses their temper, Princess Kate and Prince William take them away for a “sofa chat”.
The aim of this is to encourage the children to communicate their feelings and thoughts to help them understand why the situation happened, rather than being left to deal with the feelings alone. The parents also reportedly ban shouting from their home.
The parenting style used by Princess Kate has been hailed by experts and royal commentators, with former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond telling OK! Magazine that the couple’s parenting approach was more “normal” than the approaches used by other royals before them.
She said: “Catherine’s idea of nurturing children stems from her own very happy, solid childhood, and that’s a role model she is emulating with her own three kids.
“She has also embraced the very modern way of dealing with children’s emotions: never shouting, making sure you listen to their complaints and tantrums, letting them express their feelings and their anger freely.”
