Princess Eugenie revealed a career that she “always wanted” to pursue in a new documentary, My National Gallery.

The 34-year-old is set to follow in the footsteps of Queen Camilla, King Charles and Prince William by starring in a new documentary – which is set to air on ITV1 on December 30.

My National Gallery will celebrate 200 years since the institution first opened its doors in 1824. The documentary will conduct interviews with its staff and famous visitors including the likes of Michael Palin and Claudia Winkleman.

Eugenie, who is mum to two sons aged three and one, previously promoted the documentary on her Instagram account and explained why she is enamoured by a particular painting by Antonio de Correggio – The Madonna of the Basket.

In the clip, she said: “I’m Eugenie and I work at Hauser & Wirth, a contemporary gallery in London. I’ve chosen Correggio Madonna of the Basket and it’s from 1524. I see a lot of similarities with this and my life.”

She later explained in the documentary why she had always enjoyed art – also revealing what her dream career would have been.

She added she “did art at school”, before confessing: “I always wanted to be an artist.”

Eugenie, who has worked as a director at Hauser & Wirth since 2017, continued: “I remember going to National Gallery and just sitting and drawing and now when I go around a gallery I see all the young people doing that and I’m like, “I used to do that”.

The princess continued: “I wish I could find my drawings from those moments where I was a student right in the front studying and looking and learning all about history and art.”

Princess Eugenie is reportedly currently looking at ways to balance a Christmas with the royals at Sandringham alongside time abroad with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are now based in California, are said to be close to Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank and have reportedly invited them to spend Christmas with them in the US.

A source, who recently spoke to Express.co.uk, said: “Harry and Meghan have invited Eugenie and Jack to join them in California during the holidays. It’s a very difficult position for Eugenie because she has also been invited to Sandringham.

“It would be so nice for the children to spend time with their cousins. The diary is very tight over the holidays but there might be a slot free around New Years’ time for everyone to come together at some point.”
