During an energetic mountain ramble with Australian wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin, Prince William has opened up about how his children quiz him on one particular wildlife topic – animals.
The Prince of Wales continued his four-day climate-focused tour and walked up Signal Hill with the EarthShot Prize global ambassador to look over the sweeping views of Cape Town.
Appearing in a video with Robert – who is the late Steve Irwin’s son – asked King Charles’s eldest son, if he had a favourite African animal.
Prince William candidly said: “It’s a really tough question.
“My children ask me this regularly. I think I’m going to have to say the cheetah.”
William added they were “fantastic animals” as Robert proceeded to label his favourite were “chamaeleons”.
Fans of the video praised the video, labelling it as a “cute selfie interview” as Robert filmed the interaction on a camera.
Prince William spent the morning understanding the area’s biodiversity and walking through the Cape Flora Region.
The Prince was guided by park rangers, mountain volunteers, and biodiversity experts led by Robert who is an Earthshot Prize global ambassador and the son of Australian conservationist Steve Irwin, who was tragically by a stingray in the Great Barrier Reef in 2006.
Robert has long been a keen wildlife photographer and became an Earthshot ambassador in September.
The Prince has also met with South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa and the UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
Since William’s arrival, he has visited Ocean View Secondary School where he participated in a rugby coaching session on the school playing fields alongside legends of the sport.
Kensington Palace uploaded a new video on X upon Prince William’s arrival and showed bits of the city as it celebrated this week’s events with the caption: “Molweni Cape Town, it’s great to be back in South Africa!
“What a week ahead we have here for the fourth annual @EarthshotPrize Awards and the @united4wildlife Summit. We can’t wait to share it with you.”
William’s visit will attend the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony on Wednesday when five category winners will each receive £1 million to scale up their plans to “repair” the planet.
The environmental competition is held annually and aims to discover, celebrate, accelerate and scale environmental solutions that can lead the world into harmony by 2030.
William, Earthshot’s founder and president, is the driving force behind the awards and has attended all the presentation events since launching the initiative in 2021.
Princess Kate has not joined William but she has stayed at home to look after their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
