Since King Charles took to the throne in 2022, he has majorly slimmed down the monarchy, with just a few top senior royals carrying out work under the name of the Crown. Among those senior royals is the Duchess of Edinburgh.
In her vital role, Sophie, 60, has carried out a number of royal engagements since marrying Prince Edward in 1999, with this unlikely to stop anytime soon. This is because while King Charles, 76, is fond of having her around, it seems that Prince Willam really understands her value and knows just how much she is “needed”.
This means that when he becomes King, it is likely his aunt Sophie will still be one of the senior royals at his side, with a source revealing that both William, 43, and his wife Princess Kate, 43, admire the Duchess and Prince Edward.
A royal source told The Sun: “Undoubtedly she is going to play an important role in the future.
“William feels that Edward and Sophie are need- ed. The important work that they do is seen.”
The insider, who knows Sophie, has also said that the Duchess is “keen” to take on more work for the monarchy herself. They added: “Until now she has been a bit like Princess Anne — someone who has done a hell of a lot of travelling to engagements all over the world without any real fanfare.
“The places she has gone to are often not very fashionable, to say the least, but she happily goes and gives each engagement her all because she knows she is representing the King.”
The source continues: “The duchess is very good at doing her own research for those engagements and writing her own speeches, as does the duke.”
Over the last few years, Sophie seems to have had a surge in popularity among royal fans, with some even dubbing her “Super Sophie”.
She has also pleased royal fans by stepping out at engagements with Prince William on occasion, having visited the Royal Cornwall Show together just weeks ago.
This sent royal fans into a frenzy, with many commenting on the sweet bond they share. One fan wrote: “What I like the most about Prince William and Sophie’s joint engagements, is that they always seem to have great fun together. Lovely family bond.” Another commented: “I really love this duo together.”
