Prince Harry may be enjoying his life in California now, but it appears the duke was not initially as delighted about “Megxit” as he is now, according to a royal expert.

After announcing their desire to quit life as senior working royals in 2020 and move overseas to America to become financially independent, the Duke of Sussex, 40, made it clear he wanted to continue to work for the late Queen Elizabeth II.

However, the idea of being able to work for the late Queen while living abroad and becoming “financially independent” was rejected by the monarchy, meaning that the prince had to step back from royal life.

In a new documentary about Prince Harry released on Tuesday in Germany, named Harry: The Lost Prince, a royal biographer appeared to discuss Megxit in more detail.

Biographer Angela Levin said that when quitting the UK, the prince “didn’t get exactly what he wanted”, which was to be “half in the royal family and half out”.

When discussing why Harry’s idea of working for the late Queen overseas was not given the greenlight, she said: “The late Queen who died said that actually doesn’t work and I don’t want you to use your position within the royal family to make money.”

Despite no longer being senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are still able to use their royal titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

These titles have been used in many of their work projects including their recent upcoming Netflix show Polo.

Meghan Markle has also used her royal title when it comes to her new brand American Riviera Orchard, which is reportedly set to officially launch next year.

Since the release of the documentary on Tuesday, both Harry and Meghan have been spotted at separate events and have not directly addressed the documentary.

Instead, the prince has responded to reporters questions at the 2024 New York Times DealBook Summit about the speculation regarding his marriage.

He could be heard saying: “Apparently we’ve bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So it’s just like, what?

“I’ve had a lived experience since I was a kid, I’ve seen stories written about myself that aren’t exactly based on reality.”
