Prince Harry told 'door open' to mend rift as King Charles 'would love to have him back'

Prince Harry could find that “the door is always open” for him to come back into the royal fold despite the frosty state of his relationship with King Charles and his brother, a royal author has claimed.

The Duke of Sussex has been at odds with his father since before he and his wife Meghan Markle decided to step down from their roles – an issue he repeatedly addressed in interviews and his memoir Spare.

Sources close to King Charles over the years have suggested he remains eager to mend the rift with his youngest son, and royal author Robert Hardman insisted reunification remains possible.

He argued it’s unlikely Harry will be asked to rejoin the Firm as a working member but he could still salvage his relationship with his father.

The author of The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy said: “I don’t know how and when. Certainly, on this side of the Atlantic, the door is always open, and there’s so much other stuff going on.

The prospect of Harry’s return to at least partial duty has been the subject of some speculation since the Royal Family confirmed some immediate changes to the royal rota due to medical treatment.

Kate, the Princess of Wales is expected to remain off-duty until at least Easter after she underwent abdominal surgery last week.

And the King this week will also get treatment because of his enlarged prostate, forcing him to cancel some engagements.

Hardman said: “Someone said to me today, ‘could this be the moment with the royal work shortage, for Harry to step in?’ But it doesn’t work like that.

“What would probably help move towards that situation is if he gradually started having a sort of normalising… suddenly it’s not such a big deal if Harry and Meghan are coming over to the UK privately with their children and having a playdate with their cousins.”
