Prince Harry will be offered the chance to make a documentary to mark the 30th anniversary of his mother Princess Diana’s death, a senior Hollywood source has revealed.
The two or three-part series would air in 2027, three decades after Diana was killed in a horrific car crash in Paris in August 1997, as part of a new long-term Netflix deal for the Sussexes, inset.
“The idea is that it would be a solo project for Harry, who would be a co-executive producer as well as hosting and narrating the series,” said the Los Angeles source.
“He is uniquely placed, not only to talk about the woman he knew as his mother, but also to examine her role as an enduring social and cultural icon still beloved by so many.”
The production executive added: “It’s felt that this is something he would handle with passion and sensitivity, offering fresh insights into not only her life, but also her lasting legacy.”
Millions of TV viewers who watched Diana’s funeral still recall the haunting images of Harry, then aged 12, and his brother Prince William, who was 15, walking solemnly behind their mother’s coffin in a public procession.
Our source added: “Nothing has been agreed yet but this is being talked about in an extremely positive way.
“Harry might even see it as a stepping stone to building bridges with William and the rest of his family.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s generous £77.2million agreement with the streaming giant, signed in 2020, comes to an end this year.
Now the California-based pair look certain to be offered a fresh contract, as Netflix is to enter into a commercial partnership with the couple.
It is already promoting merchandise from Meghan’s new As Ever brand on its viewer website Tudum and – despite many ferociously negative reviews – has ordered a second season of her show With Love, Meghan.
The lifestyle and cookery series cracked the Netflix top 10 list, landing at number six in both the UK and US. As the Sunday Express has revealed, the Sussexes will be expected to attend live sessions with fans at two giant Netflix megastores being built in the US this year to help promote merchandise sales.
Our well-placed insider added: “Their next big deal with Netflix is going to be much more results-driven, rather than a massive upfront payment.”
Earlier this month, the studio, which now has more than 300 million subscribers, announced it aims to spend almost £14billion on content this year.
Netflix co-chief executive officer Ted Sarandos – who has previously described Harry and Meghan as “the jewels in our crown” – last week hit back at poor reviews of the Duchess’s new show.
He confirmed: “We’re a passive partner in Meghan’s company and it’s a big discovery model for us right now.”
Spokespeople for both Prince Harry and Netflix did not respond to requests for official comment.
