As reported by The Telegraph, the duke said: “I had to check with my wife and the British government to make sure it was OK. Then the official invitation came.”
The prince’s visit comes after he was invited to Ukraine’s capital by Olga Rudnieva, the founder and CEO of the Superhumans Trauma Centre in Ukraine.
The Duke had previously met Olga in New York, and told The Guardian that when he asked her how he could help, she said: “The biggest impact you have is coming to Kyiv.”
Harry also met Olga when he visited Lviv in Ukraine in April. During that previous visit, Harry had visited The Superhumans Center where patients receive free prosthetics, surgery, and psychological support. The duke had also met with war victims at the clinic and wanted to see what services were available to help those affected by the war.
During his visit today, the prince and a team from his Invictus Games Foundation will set out new initiatives to support the rehabilitation of wounded people across the country. It is believed the foundation wants to help people in all areas of Ukraine access help and support.
Prince Harry will also reportedly visit the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. During this engagement, it is believed he will meet 200 veterans.
Before departing the country, Harry – who has not been accompanied by his wife Meghan Markle – is also expected to sit down with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
As a result of quitting royal life in 2020, Harry’s visit to Ukraine has nothing to do with the Royal Family.
