Prince Harry has been savaged for his and Meghan Markle’s new Netlflix show, with a royal expert claiming the Duke of Sussex is being “laughed at” for it.
As part of the couple’s £80 million deal with the streaming giant, they have executive produced a behind-the-scenes documentary about the world of polo, a sport that Harry plays.
But the series, called Polo, has not gone down as well as the couple might’ve hoped, with some experts suggesting it was made merely to boost their egos.
Royal correspondent Rupert Bell spoke to people within the world of polo and revealed their opinions of the show. He said Polo feels more like a reality show rather than an informative deep-dive into the sport.
He told Talk TV: “It’s almost being laughed at by members of the polo community at the elite level because it just feels like a bit of a polo reality show around some people with a bit of an ego.
“It’s not really polo at the very highest standard say some people. You’ve got a guy that seems to swear the whole way through it, and it’s obviously trying to create family tensions, so it’s no more than a sort of polo-based reality TV show.
“It hasn’t gone down particularly well with the polo community because it seems to be a distraction and these players, and there aren’t many of them, that are featured are not at the elite level.
“Of course there are a couple, and we know it’s a tough sport, but at the same time in terms of the content of it, it’s not particularly good.”
Bell is not the only one to deliver a damning verdict of the show. Polo failed to make an impression on its audience, with commentators slamming it as “tedious” and “a disaster”.
It also failed to crack the top 10 most watched of any of Netflix’s regional markets after its release on December 10.
Prince Harry’s own pal and polo player also had a dire two-word assessment of the docu-series.
Tommy Severn, who played alongside both Harry and Prince William in their youth and is captain of Polo England, branded the series the series “very weird”, according to MailOnline.
Severn also claimed Prince Harry has “cut ties” with the UK, adding that “if he came back now, he’d look like an idiot”.
