Prince Harry and Meghan Markle cling onto royal links as official website never shut down

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal website is still live, even though it has been almost four years since they announced they were stepping down as working royals.

The site has also not been updated to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022, suggesting it is not still used by the couple, however they have clung onto their Sussex titles.

This is despite their pledge to stop using the label ‘Sussex Royal’ “in any territory” once they were no longer working members of the Royal Family.

The website sussexroyal.com remains live, as does their Instagram page Sussex Royal, which still has nine million followers even though the Duke and Duchess have since spoken out about the dangers of social media.

One royal watcher said: “I am amazed that their Sussex Royal website is still in the public domain. The Queen is deceased and the Sussexes agreed not to use Sussex Royal moving forwards.”

One royal fan told the Daily Mail: “At the very least it should reflect the Queen’s death and be updated with King Charles III”, while another posted on social media: “According to the Sussex Royal website, our late Queen is still very much alive.”

It is not clear who owns or operates the Sussex Royal website as of 2023, as the domain registry GoDaddy has kept that information anonymous.

Their commitment to the monarchy remains on the website, as it states: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex deeply believe in the role of The Monarchy, and their commitment to Her Majesty The Queen is unwavering.

“Their roles will continue to reflect their sense of duty and allegiance to The Monarch and her legacy in the world, as they transition into the new working model.

“As they move to become members of the Royal Family, with financial independence, their commitment to The Monarch is resolute, and they aim to continue to fly the flag for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as called upon.”

The only apparent sign of the couple’s current work with their Archewell Foundation, which they established independently, is a link to the Archewell website on the main pages.

The last update on Sussex Royal was posted on January 18 2020, when Harry and Meghan made clear their plans to no longer work as members of the Firm.

It reads: “In line with the statement by Her Majesty The Queen, information on the roles and work of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be updated on this website in due course. We appreciate your patience and invite you to explore the site to see the current works of Their Royal Highnesses.”

The late Queen, who was succeeded by King Charles over a year ago, made a statement after the Sussexes announced their decision, in which she expressed gratitude for the work they had done and said she was “pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family. I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”
