Prime Video fans can now experience one of last year's most controversial films themselves

Prime Video fans can now experience one of 2024’s most controversial film releases for themselves.

The streamer’s latest addition is still causing a divide over the contentious reboot that some have slammed as ‘so violent it’s nearly unwatchable’.

The Crow, a fresh take on the classic that hit theatres in the 1990s, has now landed on the online retailer’s streaming service.

It is both a modern reimagining of its namesake comic and a revival of the original movie saga that debuted in 1994.

Controversy stems from the tragic fate of Brandon Lee, who portrayed the protagonist in the first instalment at the tender age of 28 but was tragically killed during filming when he was accidentally shot on set.

This lead to significant script changes and reshoots to complete the movie without him, reports Surrey Live.

Talk of remaking The Crow began circulating back in 2008, drawing a slate of Hollywood heavyweights such as Mark Wahlberg, Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddlestone, and Luke Evans—all once tipped for the headline role.

Despite this star-studded interest, the project consistently faced backlash from devotees opposed to the idea of a remake. Alex Provas, director of the iconic original, openly endeavoured to halt production back in 2019, stating: “It’s not just a movie that can be remade. It’s one man’s legacy. And it should be treated with that level of respect.”

James O’Barr, the creator of the comic, once confessed that Lee’s death felt like losing his fiancée all over again, leading him to regret ever penning the comic. However, in 2014, O’Barr clarified that they wouldn’t be remaking the film but re-adapting the book, likening it to the existence of two distinct yet popular versions of Dracula films based on Bram Stoker’s novel.

Bill Skarsgard, known for his roles in other remakes such as Pennywise the Clown in IT and Count Orlok in Nosferatu, steps into the shoes of Eric Draven AKA The Crow. FKA Twigs stars opposite him as Shelley, Draven’s girlfriend.

The pair portray soulmates who meet a tragic end when her dark past resurfaces. Presented with an opportunity to save his beloved by sacrificing himself, Draven embarks on a vengeful journey against their murderers, navigating between the realms of the living and the dead to right the wrongs.

Despite Lee’s untimely demise, three standalone sequels followed the original film, each featuring a different actor and character as the eponymous hero. However, these sequels were met with disappointment from critics and fans alike.

The 2024 remake has sparked mixed reactions among viewers. It garnered a mere 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers questioning its necessity.

One critic even asserted: “It is also so violent it is very nearly unwatchable.”

Many aficionados of The Crow herald the 2024 adaptation as truer to its comic roots instead of drawing from the 1994 film. One viewer clarified: “Everyone throwing shade at the Crow 2024 are missing the major point. It’s not a remake of the 1994 film, but rather a rework of the original comic book/story line.”

They praised the film’s execution, saying: “Well acted , great effects, The Matrix meets John Wick, in Goth style. Doesn’t stray far from the original book, even get to see some still art from O’Barr’s brain acted out on film. Hidden gem, well worth the time and a watch.”

Another chimed in supporting this perspective, proclaiming: “The Crow is a stunning reimagining of the cult classic, blending modern visuals with a timeless tale of love and vengeance. While it may not entirely capture the raw intensity and gothic charm that made the 1994 original so iconic, it still delivers a powerful and emotionally charged narrative.

“The film stays true to the spirit of its predecessor while introducing fresh elements that resonate with contemporary audiences. The haunting performance by Bill Skarsgard, combined with a beautifully atmospheric soundtrack, ensures that this retelling is a worthy homage that stands strong on its own merits.”

Yet, detractors exist who dismiss the latest installment categorically as a ‘waste of time’, urging viewers to revisit the beloved original version which is also currently available on Amazon Prime.

The Crow is streaming on Amazon Prime.
