Prime Video adds 'most surprisingly funny films of the year' with all-star cast

Prime Video has just added what is being hailed as one of the funniest films of the year that boasts an all-star cast.

Deep Cover, which hit the streaming service today (June 12), is set to deliver a blend of high-octane action and sharp comedy in one explosive package.

Film enthusiasts have been buzzing with anticipation since Amazon premiered the trailer.

The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard of Jurassic World fame, Orlando Bloom of Lord of The Rings, and Nick Mohammed, known for his role in Ted Lasso.

The plot follows three London-based improv actors, played by the aforementioned trio, who are unexpectedly recruited by the police to infiltrate the city’s most notorious criminal rings.

Their task is to carry out covert sting operations to apprehend the criminals, using nothing but their wits and improvisational prowess, sticking to the “yes, and…” principle.

Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow, the latter also producing, penned the original script. Trevorrow is celebrated for directing the Jurassic World series and the 2012 hit Safety Not Guaranteed, reports Surrey Live.

The screenplay was then fully developed by British writers Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, who adapted it for a London setting. The two are also recognised as the comedic pair behind The Pin.

The latest film linked to Jurassic World’s maestro Colin Trevorrow has garnered rave online reviews, with one critic declaring, “Probably the most enjoyable project in years with the names Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly attached to it.”

The talented ensemble has also received plaudits, as one review highlighted: “It’s near-perfect popcorn entertainment, an action-comedy with okay action and really funny comedy that puts its all-star cast to work playing exaggerated pastiches of their usual screen personas.”

Orlando Bloom, known for his roles in Lord of The Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, is tipped as the film’s standout, with one reviewer remarking, “Orlando Bloom steals the show in Colin Trevorrow-produced fun, high-concept crime comedy.”

Although initially boasting a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this perfect score is based on fewer than ten critiques, leaving the final consensus up in the air.

Nevertheless, the flick is being heralded as a streaming hit this weekend, described by one pundit as, “Snappy and entertaining with a strong cast that boasts superb comedic timing, Deep Cover is a fun, if safe, easy watch that’s fit for the streaming age.”

Another critic from the esteemed Roger Ebert website concurred, writing: “It’s one of the most surprisingly funny films of the year so far, a reminder of how far a comedy can overcome when it hires the right people to land the jokes.”

Deep Cover is streaming on Prime Video.
