Poundland will be closing all of its stores across the UK later this year as a show of appreciation for its staff. Last week, the budget retailer announced closures to give workers bit of time to put their feet up amid the frantic festive period.
Branches nationwide will be shuttered on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day, the firm revealed on Monday last week. Poundland is also giving each worker a book of £25 vouchers in November to use in-store during December and January 2026.
Darren MacDonald, Country Manager UK at the high street giant, said: “It’s no secret that 2025 has been one of our most challenging years, but the support and commitment from our colleagues has been nothing short of amazing – and I’m delighted we can renew our commitment to give them the time they deserve over the holidays.
“I know how much our colleagues are looking forward to making shopping in stores a magical experience this year- and we’re proud to support them with a proper festive break.”
It comes after Poundland closed several stores this year as it looks to reduce the size of its estate of branches.
The closures are part of a restructuring plan launched in June after the firm was sold to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1.
The move is part of efforts to save the brand in the wake of a downturn in trading that brought it close to running out of money.
Poundland reported a pre-tax loss of £35.7m for the last financial year, and said earlier this year that employer National Insurance contributions would present further difficulties for the group, BBC News reports.
The retailer explained in a recent statement: “In time Poundland still expects to operate a network of around 650-700 stores compared to 800 at the beginning of the restructuring programme, as leases expire or landlords exercise any option to serve notice.
It added that “clearance sales underway and launching in the coming weeks are all taking place at lease-expiry locations as Poundland continues its programme to simplify its retail network around its best-performing sites, securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores”.
