Poundland will shut 16 stores before the end of this year. The bargain retailer already announced a major restructure in June with plans to shut 68 shops and two warehouses. However, it has added a further 10 stores to the list, with 13 branches set to disappear in November, and three set to shut in December. All of the earmarked sites are in England.
It comes after the bargain chain announced a major shakeup to its strategy to “go back to its roots” and “end additional price complexity” by listing grocery items at £1, £2, and £3 across its UK stores. It pledged to list around 60% of its grocery items at £1 as part of the changes.
Having started with around 800 stores before the major closures, the number is expected to dwindle to around 650 or 700 as leases expire. By September, the high street staple had already closed 57 stores in its estate.
The chain has now announced clearance sales as shutters close forever on some branches. A Poundland spokesperson said: “Customers will be able to take advantage of significant savings as these stores prepare for closure in the days ahead.
“The reductions of up to 40% will see items marked down in price until they’re sold and cover all the stock in each store from homewares to groceries and clothing to health and beauty.”
Poundland’s UK country manager, Darren MacDonald, added: “And when we close our doors, we look forward to welcoming customers to one of the hundreds of Poundland stores we’ll continue to operate right across the UK.”
