Poundland is set to close a dozen stores across the UK next month. The budget retailer will shut the sites for good on Sunday, August 24, as part of a major restructuring plan.
It comes after it was confirmed that Poundland would shut ten stores on Sunday, August 10, and a further 15 on Sunday, August 17. A total of 68 branches will close, with dates and locations confirmed for 40 of them. The following 28 are expected to shut for good by mid-October in the latest blow for the UK high street.
As reported by The Sun, retail director at Poundland Darren MacDonald, said: “While our anticipated network of around 650-700 stores remains sizeable, it is of course, sincerely regrettable that we’re closing a number of stores to allow us to get us back on track.
“We entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when a store nearby closes, but we look forward to continuing to welcome them to one of our other locations.
“Work is underway to with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles.”
Poundland was sold by Pepco to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1 last month. Part of the deal involved the business undergoing a restructuring plan.
It was previously reported that the Poundland store in the Templars shopping park, Oxfordshire, will also close for good on Thursday, August 7. The closure is not part of the recently announced 68 shops that will shut across the UK.
Bosses failed to reach an agreement that would allow the shop to continue trading. It is understood that a Superdrug store could be in line to replace it after a planning application was submitted.
