Poundland has closed another store in a “surprise move” despite it not appearing on the recently released list of planned store closures. One of the UK’s biggest budget retailers has recently shut its branch in Birmingham.
The move comes after Poundland confirmed the list of 48 stores which will be closed along with their locations. The popular discount brand is working on a major restructuring plan that will see the closing of 68 shops by mid-October. Several Poundland stores in Birmingham were scheduled for closure, including the Kings Heath and Sheldon branches on August 24, followed by the Erdington store on August 31.
These closures were publicly announced in advance. However, in a surprising development, the Selly Oak location at Battery Retail Park—one of the more prominent branches—was not included in the original list but has now shut down permanently.
This unexpected move has caught many shoppers off guard, especially given the store’s visibility and popularity in the area.
Poundland’s store closures aren’t limited to Birmingham, an additional 12 locations across the UK are scheduled to shut down this week.
In the lead-up to these closures, the retailer has launched a major clearance event, offering discounts of up to 75 percent.
Poundland, which currently operates around 800 stores across the UK, is undergoing a major transformation aimed at reducing its footprint to between 650 and 700 locations.
This shift follows the sale of the retailer by its Polish parent company, Pepco Group, to the US investment firm Gordon Brothers for just £1—a move prompted by a significant decline in trading performance.
Pepco had owned Poundland since 2016, but after the chain was put up for auction in March, restructuring plans were swiftly set in motion. These include widespread store closures, an £80 million cash injection, and the shutdown of key distribution centres—specifically the frozen and digital hub in Darton, South Yorkshire later this year, and the national centre in Bilston, West Midlands by early 2026.
Additionally, Poundland will discontinue its online sales to concentrate on expanding its womenswear and seasonal product lines, marking a strategic pivot in its retail approach.
