Apple pies have been recalled over concerns that they could trigger potentially life-threatening allergies. Customers with nut allergies are being urged not to eat the Luxury Apple Pie sold in Dunnes Stores in Northern Ireland.
Some packs may contain Luxury Pear and Almond Pie, which contains almonds, which are not mentioned on the label. A notice issued by the Food Standards Agency said: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to nuts (almonds), do not eat it.
“Instead, return it to where it was purchased for a refund.” The recall applies to 750g packs with a best-before date of June 16.
Almonds are one of the most common triggers for people with tree nut allergies.
Symptoms of a reaction include a red rash, tingling or itchy feeling in the mouth, swelling of the lips, face or eyes, and stomach pain or vomiting.
In serious cases, this can lead to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Around one in 50 children and one in 200 adults have a nut allergy in the UK.
While most develop in early childhood, it is possible for adults to develop them later in life despite having consumed tree nuts previously without issue.
The FSA said Dunnes Stores had contacted the relevant allergy support organisations to alert their members.
