Hotel bathrooms are often spotless, with crystal-clear shower doors, smear-free mirrors and perfectly white tile grout.
One area of the bathroom that is notoriously difficult to clean – and keep clean – is the shower.
Showers tend to get laden in dirt, limescale, soap scum and mould if they’re not cleaned regularly.
With multiple guests using showers every week, how do housekeepers keep showers in hotels so clean?
The unusual solution was revealed on Reddit when one user asked how hotels keep showers so clean. They posted: “Almost every hotel I’ve stayed at has had perfectly clean/white showers.
“What product/method does housekeeping use to attain this? I try and try and can never get my shower at home looking this good.”
The Reddit post was inundated with responses, with some users claiming that because they’re cleaned most days, they naturally remain very clean.
Others also said most hotels use a pink commercial-grade cleaner that has to be diluted before being used. However, some users also said they used an item that can be bought from most supermarkets – magic erasers.
User @matchafoxjpg said: “Well, it helps that we literally clean them after every guest.
“The shorter answer, besides bleach and this weird pink cleaner all hotels seem to have, is Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. Them b****** are magical.”
They added later on that they didn’t even know about the hack until they started working at a hotel.
Another user @SkwrlTail replied: “Seconded on those. Mind, you can get them a lot cheaper if you order ‘melamine sponge’ from Amazon. Exact. Same. Thing. Get literally a hundred for what you’d pay for a box of the name brand.”
@jamesholden added: “Can confirm. Bathroom cleaner and generic magic erasers from Amazon. Combined with cleaning every time the room flips, boom.”
Magic eraser sponges can be bought online and from most local supermarkets. Elbow Grease Magic Eraser costs £1.25 from Morrisons for two, which works out at 63p per sponge.
Flash Magic Erasers can be bought from Sainsbury’s for £3, which is £1.50 per sponge.
Magic erasers, which contain melamine, are activated with water to become an abrasive cleaner which can remove soap scum, dirt and more.
