As summer comes to a close, a debate kicks off among UK households. Is September too soon to turn on your heating? Some households wouldn’t even dream of switching their heating on in the month of September, choosing to wait until conditions get much colder to use it. However, other households may have already switched their heating on as the UK’s record-breaking 2025 heatwaves came to an end.
With rising costs of heating homes, more Brits might be trying to hold out a little bit longer when it comes to switching their heating on. However, with cold weather on the way, switching the heating on might be unavoidable, and there are a number of ways you can make it run more efficiently, such as bleeding radiators as soon as possible and making sure you get a boiler service to save on unexpected costs down the line.
September’s weather has been somewhat temperamental so far, with blasts of wind and rain in parts of the country. Temperatures are far below the highs we experienced over the summer months, staying mostly in the teens for the majority of the country.
However, some areas have experienced temperatures as low as 2C, which may have prompted them to switch their heating on earlier than they planned on doing.
Heating is important for a number of reasons, not just keeping you and your family warm as the weather gets colder. In fact, heating can help to keep mould at bay, which in turn helps to keep households healthy. So, we want to know, is September too early to turn your heating on in the UK?

Experts have been sharing a number of ways that Brits can save money on their energy bills as costs reach new highs. Stephen Hankinson, Heating Expert at Electric Radiators Direct, revealed that the NHS advises switching on heating when temperatures outside fall below 15C.
“We can expect this to happen from September, so now is the perfect time to prepare yourself and set a heating routine,” he explained.
“The coldest time of the day is typically shortly after sunrise, when the rays are weak. In the mornings, I always recommend switching your heating on for a short burst between 6:30 and 7:30am. This takes the edge off the chill as you get out of bed and sets your home up for the day without wasting energy by running it for too long.”
