POLL: Do you agree with Carol Vorderman that there should be a referendum on rejoining EU? | UK | News

Carol Vorderman has demanded a second EU referendum, in response to a petition calling for a fresh General Election.

The former Countdown mathematician took to X, accusing Keir Starmer critics of “stamping their feet”, in reference to a petition that’s received more than two million votes asking for the PM to call another national poll.

“Right wingers stamping their feet saying call a General Election”, she wrote. “Tell you what…. Let’s have a Rejoin the EU referendum at the same time? Six million people signed that petition”.

In 2016 and 2019, there were pro-EU petitions that garnered more support, but were not implemented. However, the speed at which the petition calling for a new General Election has gathered support is unprecedented.

British acting legend Michael Caine became the latest celebrity to support the petition, urging Keir Starmer to dissolve Parliament and hold a fresh vote just months after Labour’s landslide win on July 4.

It comes after weeks of fury, sparked predominantly by cuts to pensioners’ winter fuel allowance and the ongoing row surrounding farmers’ inheritance tax.

During the Brexit referendum year, a poll was run demanding: “We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain and leave vote is less than 60 percent based [on] a turnout less than 75 percent there should be another referendum.” It got over four million votes.

Three years later, a poll was run calling for the Government to “revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU”. That vote got more than 6 million votes.

“The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is ‘the will of the people’. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU. A People’s Vote may not happen – so vote now”, it said.

In response, the Government said: “This Government will not revoke Article 50. We will honour the result of the 2016 referendum and work with Parliament to deliver a deal that ensures we leave the European Union.”

But what do you think? Should Remoaner Carol Vorderman’s wishes for a second EU referendum be granted? Have your say in our poll below…

Attacking the 63-year-old, X users scolded her for backing Labour in the run-up to the General Election. One said: “You pushed for these guys with your “tactical voting”, well done for freezing pensioners. You must be so proud.”

Another wrote: “It took five years for that petition to hit 6.1m, it’s not even 36 hours and this one is nearly at 2m. You’re also denigrating a frustrated public again – if two-thirds of a population does not vote for Labour, does that make them all right wing?”

A third said: “Yes Carol, but when leave voters won the vote, they got what they voted for, we left. When labour voters “won the vote” they then got the exact opposite of what they’d voted for.”
