Plymouth crash horror as girl and woman killed after being hit by car


A young girl and woman have died after being hit by a car in Plymouth. Police rushed to the scene of the horror smash in the St Budeaux area earlier today, where they found the two pedestrians suffering from serious injuries.

They were rushed to hospital but died a short while later. Victoria Road remains closed while investigation work takes place. 

An elderly woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Pictures from the scene show a large cordon in place with several police vehicles and officers surrounding it.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Emergency services were called at around 9.45am today, Sunday 24 March, to a report of a collision involving a car and two pedestrians on Victoria Road, Plymouth. A young girl and a woman both sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance.

“Police have since been informed that they have both died. Their next of kin have been informed.”

The force added: “A 74-year-old woman from Plymouth has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and of driving while unfit through drink or drugs. She remains in police custody at this time.

“The road currently remains closed and officers from the Roads Policing Team are carrying out investigations at the scene. Plymouth Citybus said there had been a ‘major’ collision on the road and several buses have been diverted throughout the day as a result. At the time of writing Victoria Road remains closed in both directions closed due to accident investigation work.
