PlayStation fans treated to more bad news as hugely popular feature leaves PS5

Sony recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation with some fun bonus features on the PS5.

For starters, fans of the original PlayStation were thrilled to be greeted by the classic PSOne start up screen when turning on the PS5.

Likewise, Sony made a selection of classic PlayStation themes available for the PS5 home screen.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, PS5 users could rock themes dedicated to the PSOne, PS2, PS3 and PS4.

Proving that all good things must come to an end, Sony has just confirmed plans to remove the classic PlayStation console themes.

In a post on X, Sony said that the PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PS4 themes will be removed on January 31.

On the plus side, the platform holder has announced plans to bring the themes back in the months ahead.

“Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow,” reads a Sony tweet.

“Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”

In a follow-up tweet, Sony said that while new themes aren’t in the work, it will continue to celebrate PlayStation hardware in the future.

“While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we’re excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”

It’s the second piece of bad news this week, following Sony’s plans to stop giving away PS4 games to PS Plus Essential subscribers beginning next January.

According to a recent statement by Sony, the monthly offerings will shift away from PS4 and focus almost exclusively on PS5 games.

This means that while occasional PS4 and cross-platform games will join the line-up, the majority of games will be PS5 only.

Fortunately, this won’t affect any of the PS4 games you may have redeemed in the past.

The announcement was accompanied by a fairly mediocre selection of PS Plus games for February 2025, including Payday 3 and High on Life.

In slightly more positive PlayStation news, Microsoft has announced plans to bring Forza Horizon 5 to PS5 later this year.

Microsoft is also holding a special Halo Infinite conference later this week, so don’t be surprised if Master Chief also comes to PlayStation in the near future.
