Plants and vegetables often need a little helping hand as we enter Spring, and one hack might be just the answer. After doing the rounds online, gardeners are raving about the “magic” fertiliser, which is made from the skin of a cheap fruit that would otherwise go to waste.
The eco-friendly gardening trick uses old banana peels to make ‘banana peel tea’ or ‘banana peel water’, which gardeners say supports healthy growth in both indoor and outdoor plants. The fruit is packed with nutrients like potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, and it is incredibly simple to turn this goodness into a natural plant fertiliser, without splashing any cash.
Gardening enthusiast Carmen Johnston shared her results on Facebook, revealing that it helped her flowers, herbs and tomatoes grow.
Reporting back on her results, Carmen said: “Spearmint plant is massive and so is my dill, which is waist-high. I have loads of green cherry tomatoes and beautiful green peppers.”
To make the banana peel water, she soaked two peels overnight in a gallon of water, although others leave theirs for up to 48 hours. Then the water is simply poured over the soil.
The gardener keeps a fresh supply on the go at all times to use on vegetables, flowers and herbs, and it doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge.
Another TikToker, who shares hacks and tips on his @creative_explained page, shared with his 6.8million followers that the trick is like “magic” for plants.
One viewer responded: “I have done this for years! My plants are healthy and beautiful!”
