Piers Morgan sparks backlash as he complains 'tax-paying Brits can't see Kate Middleton'

Piers Morgan has sparked backlash from some of his followers after suggesting Kate Middleton should “release a picture” of herself to end speculation following her recent stay in hospital. It comes after an American outlet became the first publication to release photographs of the Princess of Wales after her abdominal surgery.

Taking to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Piers complained about the US press getting first access to pictures of the royal in view of his 8.7 million followers. Kensington Palace has confirmed Kate is “doing well” in her recovery following a procedure at a London Clinic in Marylebone but reaffirmed that she would not be stepping out publicly until at least April.

Piers tweeted: “If the Princess of Wales is now well enough to be out and about in a car – which is great news.” He then went on to suggest that Kate should “kill” ongoing speculation by releasing a photograph herself.

It comes after US website TMZ released grainy pictures showing the princess wearing sunglasses and a coat in the front of an Audi 4×4, as she was spotted near Windsor Castle. She flashed a seemingly low-key smile as she was snapped in the front seat of her mum, Carole Middleton’s car.

Piers added: “Bit absurd that the rest of the world is seeing the TMZ photo, but Brits whose taxes pay for the Royals can’t.” Kate has been away from public life since Christmas after she underwent planned abdominal surgery in January, and was last seen on Christmas Day with her three children at the annual Sandringham church service.

Kate is not set to return to public duties until after Easter, but it has been reported that she yesterday accompanied her mum on the school run.

A statement from the palace read: “Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the princess’ recovery and we’d only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands.”

Several of Piers’ slammed him for his comments on the photographs of Kate, taking to the comments section to share their thoughts.

Allex Marie argued: “The £1.29 that my taxes contribute to the whole of the working royal family per annum doesn’t entitle me to know either their private and confidential medical information and nor does it entitle me to invade their privacy.

“To be honest the pittance we all pay per annum entitles no one to either invade their privacy, have access to their private and confidential medical records, or to demand a photograph and statement from anyone when they are officially off duty until AFTER Easter.

“I’m a bit surprised and to be honest disappointed in your attitude Piers,” she added. (sic)

While Elon added: “Piers! Disagree completely. They announced she is off duty. Why bother otherwise? Do we really think she disappeared?”

“Show some respect for the person – sod the rest of the world – and allow her the privacy requested,” Hazel admonished.
