Petrol and diesel drivers can save embarrassment at fuel stations with little-known hack

Petrol and diesel owners can save time filling up their vehicles by using a little-known fuel cap hack.

Motorists may be baffled to realise they can always work out which side of the petrol station to pull up at through a simple code located on the car dashboard.

Where the car’s fuel pump sticker is located, drivers will notice a small arrow pointing left or right.

This clearly tells road users which side of the vehicle their fuel cap is located for ease when pulling up to a petrol station.

This will save motorists the embarrassment of pulling up to the wrong side and needing to pull a fuel nozzle over their vehicle.

If it doesn’t stretch, motorists will be required to reverse out or re-queue, adding to the time spent waiting to top up.

The tip was raised by LeaseCar.UK as they unveiled secret car features motorists likely didn’t know.

They said: “Next to the fuel icon, there’s a small arrow next to it which will let you know which side the fuel cap is on.

“While it’s likely you know by now which side it’s on, it’s still a handy feature to be aware of.”

Driving Test Success also raised awareness of the simple tip in an online video uploaded to TikTok.

The clip said: “In a lot of cars the arrow by the fuel pump on your dashboard tells you which side the fuel cap is on the car for when you fill up.”

However, the specialists did warn that some vehicles would not have the feature installed.

TikTok user @tomsbrickworks said: “Not all cars have it tho.”

Driving Test Success simply added: “Very true!”

In most vehicles, the fuel cap sticker will be located on the speedometer making it easy for tourists to locate while behind the wheel.

But, the location of the sign may vary depending on the type of vehicle meaning the tip is far from straightforward for many.

Some models will only light up the symbol when the car is low on fuel and needs to be topped up.

Experts at Scrap Car Comparison revealed “most modern cars” would have the tool but some older vehicles may miss out.

They added: “We still see people at the fuel garages straining their necks and there’s no need for it.

“Some of the older cars may not have the arrow but another good indication is the side of the pump handle on the fuel symbol – this may be the case in a few of the older cars.”
