A major airport was hit earlier today by a massive power outage, disrupting terminal operations and preventing flights from landing. Passengers arriving at Perth Airport have been warned to expect disruption with a long list of departing and arriving flights either delayed or cancelled. Parts of the terminals completely lost all power, with some arrival flights waiting to land. In a statement, the airport, which operates hundreds of daily flights, confirmed that a “power outage is impacting terminal operations” and works are underway to resolve the issue.

A spokesperson added: “Services are progressively returning to operation across Perth Airport’s terminals, however delays are still expected. We thank passengers for their understanding.” Airline Jetstar confirmed several of its flights have been delayed due to the outage.

“Jetstar is monitoring the situation and keeping affected customers updated on their flight schedules,” a spokesperson said. Authorities say the outage has been caused by an out of control bushfire in the Perth hills which sparked the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to issue an emergency warning today, with residents warned they “are in danger”.

The bushfire emergency warning has been issued for locals bound by Bird Road, Panoramic Terrace, Ozone Terrace, Yorna Road and Alpine Road in the City of Kalamunda. Locals in Kalamunda, an eastern suburb of Perth, have been ordered to evacuate their homes in an easterly direction.

A DFES spokesperson warned: “You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes.

“If the way is clear, leave now for a safer place. This may be with family or friends away from the area.

“Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger.

“If you cannot leave, you need to get ready to shelter in your home. You must shelter before the fire arrives, as the extreme heat will kill you before the flames reach you.”
