We’re warning you though, it may just change the way you look at a wooden spoon in the future.
How are disposable wooden spoons made?
Another video on TikTok shared how the process of making wooden spoons difference between countries, and people were shocked to learn the differences.
In one video, logs are seen being boiled whole in order to sterilise them. The logs are then cut into smaller pieces before it’s sanded down to remove the bark.
Next, factory workers put the logs into a slicer that slices the wood logs into thin shavings.
These shavings are then rolled out and ‘stamped’ into the spoon shape by another big machine.
A rolling band then moves the newly made spoons into a big dryer where the wood gets dried. They are then polished to remove any wood chips to make them suitable for eating before they’re moulded into shape.
Why are people horrifed?
While this doesn’t seem bad, the process differs between countries. While some use big machines for each stage, other countries do most things by hand.
One video shows how the process differs, starting from the beginning where the logs aren’t always sterilised but go straight into being sawed into smaller pieces by hand before the bark is shaved off – also by hand.
While the slicing and stamping of the logs are still being done by machines, several people are seen touching the wood by ungloved hands, which is being done in the other videos.
Instead of going into a drying machine to try the wood, these spoons are then being carried outside to be dried by the sun. Video footage show how workers are sat kneeling on the spoons while spreading them out on top of a large sheet before stepping on them barefooted as they go back into the factory.
They are then brought into one last machine for polishing before coming back out on the sheet to be packaged up.
People quickly took to the comments to share their thoughts on the differneces, with one person saying: “Now I get it why the girl didn’t eat the ice cream with that.”
“Good thing there is a mat to protect the spoon’s from touching the ground,” a second person said, while another user wrote: “The left one have added minerals and vitamins, while the right one just without.”
