When an unfamiliar symbol flashes up on your dashboard, it can spiral you into panic mode.
That’s exactly what happened to one motorist when an ‘i’ symbol appeared on their dashboard, with the driver admitting they have no idea what it means.
In search for answers, they pulled over, took out their phone and started searching for the answer.
They said on Reddit: “What does this ‘i’ symbol mean? Can’t find the car manual. Got a Ford Focus, 1.6liter, automatic.”
According to Ford UK, the ‘i’ symbol, often inside a square, means the vehicle has a new message or notification to display to the driver.
Usually, they appear when the car has an issue that should be checked with either the driver or a mechanic.
For this instance, it’s likely it appeared as a warning about the vehicle having 109mls in its tank or the driver door being opened.
A statement from Ford UK reads: “The instrument cluster located on your vehicle’s dashboard is equipped with warning lamps and indicators that allow you to easily monitor your vehicle’s condition and control settings.
“Upon starting your vehicle, you may see some of these indicators light up as a routine check to verify functionality.
“These lights may simply be indicating a vehicle control setting, e.g., Front Fog Lamps On.
“If certain indicators remain illuminated while your engine is running, however, they could be alerting you to a serious condition.
“Your Owner’s Manual contains a guide to the indicator lights in your vehicle.
“Please refer to this guide should any light remain on or continue flashing after starting your vehicle.
“You should take your vehicle to your local dealership to address any conditions or questions based on the warning lamps or indicators in your vehicle.”
The i symbols can typically be interpreted in similar ways, even if you don’t have a Ford. Generally, the dashboard warning suggests a system message or caution light is active.
However, it could mean something totally different for some vehicles. To be safe, it’s always best to check your motor’s manual for the full instructions.
We’d also recommend visiting a mechanic or expert if you have any concerns about warning signs popping up on your car.
