The heartwarming bond between a 93-year-old widower and his senior cat has captured the hearts of many after their daily routine was shared on social media, and it’s not the first time a cat has warmed the hearts of the nation. Sarah Annett, 34, took to TikTok to share the touching relationship her grandfather, Walter Annett, shares with his elderly cat Angus, who he’s had for over a decade.
In an interview with Newsweek, Sarah explained that Angus initially sought refuge in Walter’s home, which he shared with his late wife, as a way to escape from his loud but loving household filled with young children. Over time, Angus began spending more time at Walter’s until he practically lived there.
Sarah, from New Zealand, explained that Angus’ original owners were aware of his frequent visits to Walter’s and eventually decided it would be best if Walter kept him, believing he could provide the peaceful life Angus clearly desired.
When Walter moved to a retirement village, he, of course, brought Angus along so they could continue their companionship. Now, a decade after their first meeting, the inseparable pair have established a sweet daily routine together.
“Every morning my 93-year-old Poppy gets his little cart ready for his daily walk with his elderly cat Angus…” Sarah captioned the TikTok video, showing Angus hopping into the cart that had been prepared by Walter.
Once Angus settles in, Walter emerges from his flat into the hallway, with their first task being to check the weather conditions to decide on the optimal walking route and whether venturing outdoors is advisable.
Having made their decision, off they go! Sarah continued by revealing that both Angus and Poppy have become celebrities within the retirement community, frequently pausing for conversations with fellow residents.
When they’ve had enough socialising, the pair make their way back inside the building and return to their flat. “It’s their little morning routine that makes their day,” Sarah captioned the footage showing the devoted pair heading home.
She elaborated in the video’s description: “Routine and companionship are vital for elderly wellbeing. Daily structure and animal bonds like the one between Poppy and Angus provide purpose, movement and connection. As we age a loyal pet can be more than company… they become part of the reason we keep going.”
