Pentagon insider warns 'serious' Russian nuke threat 'consistent with Putin’s strategy'

A Pentagon insider has warned the concerning claim that Russia has procured nuclear weapons that could be fired into space “needs to be taken seriously.”

Mike Hewitt voiced apprehensions over Russia’s purported development of space-based nuclear weapons. His comments come amidst escalating tensions between Russia and the West, particularly concerning the situation in Ukraine.

Speaking to Daily Express US, Hewitt emphasized the strategic implications of Russia’s alleged new space weapon, suggesting that it aligns with President Vladimir Putin’s war tactics.

He said: “Russia’s supposed new space weapon is consistent with Putin’s strategy of asymmetric warfare and announcements of advanced capabilities as well as threats to use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine.”

Hewitt’s remarks underscore the gravity with which US intelligence and certain members of Congress are treating the reports of Russia’s space-based nuclear weapons.

Hewitt dismissed speculations that the alleged space nukes were merely a ploy by Russia to secure funding for its operations in Ukraine.

“I don’t subscribe to the notion this is a ploy to get Ukraine funding approved,” he asserted, indicating the seriousness with which the situation is being viewed.

The development of space-based nuclear weapons by Russia marks a significant escalation in the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
