Police are searching for a gunman after an innocent Walmart employee was shot during an apparent dispute between two men inside a Pennsylvania store Friday evening, authorities said.

Officers responded to the Walmart at 50 McDade Blvd. in Darby Township, Delaware County, shortly after 7 p.m. after reports of gunfire inside the store.

Darby Township Police Chief Michael Sousa told Fox News Digital investigators believe two men got into a verbal altercation in the self-checkout area before one of them pulled out a handgun and fired.

“It looked like, from what we’re gathering with my detectives, two males get into a verbal altercation at self-checkout,” Sousa said.

“One of the males brandishes a firearm, fires a round indiscriminately and hits one of the female Walmart employees in the leg — not the subject he was arguing with.”

The employee was transported to a hospital.

Sousa did not immediately provide an update on her condition.

The suspect fled before officers arrived and remains at large.

Police are reviewing surveillance video in an effort to identify the shooter.

“There is no threat to the public,” Sousa said, adding officers have cleared the Walmart and nearby businesses.

The investigation remains ongoing.
