Peace lilies are very laid-back houseplants that do not require much care to stay healthy, but in summer they can quickly become droopy if you have them sitting on a windowsill. It may seem obvious to keep plants near a window so they get the sun, but peace lilies are quite sensitive as they naturally survive in rainforests where the light is filtered by trees.
When peace lilies are put in direct sunlight it will cause the flower petals to wilt, the leaves to become burned, and they can stop growing altogether due to the constant stress. However, houseplant expert Jael Mincey has shared how easy it is to keep peace lilies flowering in the summer – all you need is to take a few seconds to move the plant somewhere safer in your home.
She said: “They actually like low light, and they bloom most efficiently in low light conditions. I have found that the perfect place for mine is about four feet away from a south-eastern window. It gets ambient light – not direct light.”
Peace lilies thrive best in rooms with south or east-facing windows, where they will receive more of the gentle morning sunlight, as it is much kinder than the harsher afternoon rays.
Morning sunlight mimics the light they would get in a jungle so they will get the energy they need without them being damaged.
Simply place the peace lily on a table near a window, but not directly near the glass, and they should stay healthy throughout the rest of the summer.
Make sure wherever you place your peace lily is far away from any fans or radiators, as any drafts can dry out the houseplant which can cause it to stop flowering.
However, if you really want to keep a peace lily happy then a great place to put it in your home is actually a bathroom or kitchen.
Peace lilies love humidity from showers or cooking, and these rooms usually stay consistently warmer than the rest of the house which the plant will really love.
Just make sure the light from the window is bright enough to reach the plant and do not place them near a stove or heater as that will be far too hot.
