Over 40 years ago, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Rob Reiner starred in what would become a cult comedy classic.
Reiner directed the other three in This Is Spinal Tap, a mockumentary about a fictional British heavy metal band of the same name.
Dozens of hours of the comedians improvising were filmed, and now they’re getting the band back together.
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will be released in cinemas later this year and features Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John as themselves.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Spinal Tap 2 features McCartney walking in on a Tap rehearsal as they work on a song for the film’s accompanying album. Reiner shared: “McCartney comes, he listens, and then he gives a suggestion of what to do, how to fix it. And then they get into singing together…. And then that one is in the album.” But it was his improvisation skills in this movie without a script (just like the original) where both he and Elton shone the brightest.
Reiner added: “They were all great. Paul McCartney is really funny. I mean, really funny. And Elton was spot on. He knew exactly what he wanted to say, and either you can do it or you can’t do it. But these guys are used to being asked questions. They’ve been asked a million questions over their careers by reporters, and so they were totally comfortable, and you’ll see what they say. It is good.”
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues hits UK cinemas on September 12, 2025.
