Packers’ Rashan Gary in free agency drama over deleted post

Rashan Gary said goodbye, then pretended it didn’t happen.

On Friday, the Packers pass rusher posted a farewell message to Green Bay, indicating that the franchise had moved on, only to delete the message as nothing has reportedly been decided.

Reports stated the Packers are considering all their options, including a possible trade, but Gary has not been told his services are no longer needed.

It certainly seems, though, that Gary has played his last down in Green Bay, with The 33rd Team reporting the Packers have unsuccessfully tried to trade him for weeks.

Despite the personalized nature of the message, a source told ESPN that Gary’s account was hacked.

“When I got the call in 2019, it was one of the greatest moments of my life, and it will always be. The opportunity to represent Green Bay and Packers Nation across the country and around the world is something I will never forget. Like all chapters in life, this one has come to an end,” Gary posted Friday to his Instagram Story, as captured by multiple outlets, including ESPN.

“I want to thank everyone who supported me and my family throughout the years. The love, the energy and the memories mean more than words can explain. On to my next stop, nowhere near done yet. All 6’5″, 275…can’t wait.”

Gary, 28, has two years remaining on the four-year, $96 million extension he signed in 2023, and carries a $28 million cap hit in 2026 and $31 million in 2027.

The Packers would save $11 million in salary-cap space by cutting or trading him before June 1 and $19.5 million by designating him as a post-June 1 release or trade, per Over the Cap.

Gary tallied 46 1/2 sacks across his seven seasons with the team after being selected with the No. 12 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

He notched a career-high 9 1/2 sacks in 2021 and then had nine sacks two years later, but has since tallied 7 1/2 sacks in each of the last two years.

Pro Football Focus gave him a 68.2 grade, which ranked 53rd among edge players, while he tied for 19th in pressures with 31, according to Pro Football Reference.

After giving Jordan Love and new pass-rushing star Micah Parsons mega contracts in recent years, it appears the Packers are prioritizing that extra cap space.

It’s possible Gary could be looking for a new deal before he turns 30, and the parties cannot line up on the finances, especially since Parsons’ deal averages $47 million per season.
