The suspect accused of causing a deadly 8-car pileup in Oxnard has turned himself in to police and was booked on two felony counts of murder.

David Mora, 29, allegedly ran a red light in his 2018 GMC Sierra pickup and collided with two other cars, a 1998 Toyota Avalon and a 2005 Honda Civic, on Sept. 25. Both vehicles were traveling through the intersection on a green light.

Drivers of both vehicles, two unidentified men, ages 31 and 58, were pronounced dead at the scene. Five other people were also injured, with four requiring hospitalization. Four of the involved vehicles sustained major damage.

A booking log shows Mora, a Santa Paula resident, turned himself in Friday at 8 p.m. and was booked on two felony counts of murder under California Penal Code 187(A).

Oxnard police took him into custody eight days after the crash, after traffic investigators gathered enough evidence to charge him with vehicular homicide.

Mora has since been transferred to the Ventura County Jail and will next appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Oct. 6, according to booking logs. His bail has been set at $5 million.

Traffic investigators previously said they believed that speed and impairment by alcohol and/or drugs were contributing factors to the crash, according to CBS.

Video of the aftermath showed damaged vehicles scattered across the crash site and a heavily burned section of debris marking the front end of the wreck.

The footage also appeared to show two vehicles underneath or near light poles that had fallen during the collision.

The city of Oxnard is about 60 miles west of downtown Los Angeles.

The California Post reached out to the Oxnard Police Department for comment.
