Overlooked UK beach so lovely and quiet it’s ‘better than Maldives’ | UK | Travel

With a rating of four and a half stars on Tripadvisor, it’s clear that reviewers believe it’s worth the trip. Visitors have taken to the site to express their delight at discovering Southbourne beach.

One visitor praised the beach for its “golden soft sand” whilst another described it as a “beautiful beach without the crowds”. Additional reviewers have characterised the shoreline as “simply beautiful”, “a lovely place to stroll” and a “little gem”.

Many visitors consistently emphasise the pristine condition of the beach in their feedback, with one noting “Amazing stretch of sandy beach from Hengisbury Head to Bournemouth. Very clean.

“Great for a walk, picnic or swim. Probably less crowded than Bournemouth beach in peak season.”

Travelling abroad for some summer sun and a relaxing break at the beach is often temping if you’re British. Our weather is often too unpredicatable to rely upon it shining brightly on our many lovely beaches.

However, there is one part of the country that’s been likened to the sunny climes of the Costa del Sol and the French Riviera. But to sweeten the deal, this beach is significantly less busy than its European counterparts. Often overlooked thanks to its proximity to a more popular beach, Southbourne has been praised by visitors for its cleanliness, beauty and serenity.

Southbourne was awarded a Blue Flag in 2024, which is testament to the pristine condition visitors often find it. The beach offers all the necessary facilities for a family day out, including RNLI lifeguards, baby changing space and a cliff lift, reports Surrey Live.

Furthermore, it’s been named as the ‘coolest’ beach in all of Europe by one writer at The Times, who even said it beats Bali, St Tropez and the Maldives. Many visitors have said that a trip here, thanks to its golden sands and blue water, is like a visit to Costa del Sol in Spain but ‘quieter’.

Located about four miles east of Bournemouth town centre, Southbourne is one of Bournemouth’s most visited beaches. It’s situated near Boscombe pier and can be accessed directly from Southbourne high street.

Those considering a longer stay can hire one of the numerous beach huts available, though advance booking is strongly recommended.

TripAdvisor users have also noticed this, with one commenting: “There is an ice cream kiosk, public toilets, lots of beach huts but no shops as this is very much a residential area.”

Finding somewhere to eat is straightforward, with numerous fish and chip establishments located both along the seafront and nearer to the primary retail districts. Those wanting a different perspective can explore the verdant spaces such as Southbourne Overcliff, which provide spectacular panoramic views across the bay.
