Overlooked European country has ‘uncrowded beaches’ and ‘quaint atmosphere’ | Travel News | Travel

Overcrowded coastlines, rising tourist taxes, and overwhelmed infrastructure are becoming hallmarks of Europe’s most popular summer destinations. From the Balearic Islands to the Amalfi coast, hotspots are struggling to cope with the sheer volume of visitors during peak season.

With local authorities attempting to manage overtourism and protect their economies, travellers are now facing increased fees and stricter regulations. Joanne Lynn, a Travel Expert at Riviera Travel, explained: “Many popular holiday destinations are increasing fees like tourist tax to tackle overtourism, as the volume of holidaymakers that flock to these hotspots becomes overwhelming. Cruises bear the brunt, but travellers visiting these overcrowded spots will also receive a slightly heftier bill, particularly during peak summer months.”

But now there’s a quieter option that was once completely overlooked, which is gaining attention.

“Those who want to skip the crowds and the increased costs, while still enjoying a coastal holiday this summer, should venture to Montenegro,” Joanne suggested.

This small Balkan country’s appeal lies not in flashy nightlife or tourist-saturated promenades, but in its laid-back lifestyle and unspoilt nature.

Joanne added: “Located in Southeast Europe, this beautiful country has stunning landscapes and architectural charm, and is particularly appealing during summer. While it’s less lively than Balearic hotspots like Majorca and Ibiza, its quaint atmosphere and uncrowded beaches are perfect for a relaxing holiday in the sun.”

The beaches themselves are varied and scenic, offering a quieter alternative to Spain’s packed coasts.

The expert continued: “Its selection of beaches promises the perfect setting for anyone. Drobni Pijesak Beach, for example, is pebbly with turquoise water, the ideal scene for relaxation.

“Mogren Beach, comprised of two sandy beaches connected by a short tunnel, is only a stone’s throw away from the old town of Budva, perfect for exploring charm-filled streets after a day on the beach.”

Perast is a must-visit town, renowned for its man-made island, crowned by Our Lady of the Rocks – a small, blue-domed church filled with religious relics.

Local legend gives the town an added layer of intrigue, with Joanne recounting: “The legend goes that the island was built by local sailors who, after finding an icon of Madonna painted on a rock, threw rocks into the lake after every successful voyage, eventually building the church to give thanks to Madonna for their protection.

“If you reach through a hole behind the altar, you can touch what’s said to be the original rock.”
