More than 140,000 drivers are currently banned from driving on UK roads, with one city the most affected area in the country.
DVLA data, analysed by motoring experts Dayinsure, found that 140,792 road users were off the road.
This equates to one in every 374 driving licence holders in the UK now unable to get behind the wheel.
The number has dramatically increased with just one in 431 licence holders banned this time last year.
However, Liverpool tops the list with around one in 210 licence holders banned from driving, a total of 3,154 road users.
Nicholas Shaw, managing director at Dayinsure said: “While the vast majority of UK motorists comply with the law, it is still alarming to see that so many motorists have been disqualified from driving due to dangerous and careless driving.
“The data highlights how vital it is for motorists to take extra care and attention when driving, as you never know what other road users might be doing – you sadly cannot just assume that others will drive as carefully as you would.
“Our final piece of advice would be to ensure that you are fully insured in case worse comes to worse and you are involved in an accident.”
Bradford was next with 2,159 licences taken off their owners, also one in 210 motorists in the area.
Teesside was next with 2,207 motorists banned, followed by Llandudno in Wales (1,737) and Wakefield (1,691).
Blackburn, Leeds, Oldham, Sunderland and Halifax rounded out the top 10 areas in the UK.
Motorists can lose their freedom to drive if they accumulate more than 12 penalty points on their driving licence.
Penalty points for reckless or dangerous diving will usually stay on a driver’s record for four years.
However, more serious incidents such as drink and drug driving could remain under motorists’ names for up to 11 years.
Newly qualified road users have a lower threshold and may have their photocard revoked if they pick up just six penalty points within two years.
Courts have the power to issue instant driving bans for some serious offences such as dangerous driving, drink driving, and speeding.
