Lord Frederick and Sophie Winkleman’s daughter, named Maud Elizabeth Daphne Marina Windsor, was born on this day in 2013. Prior to the birth of Princess Lilibet in 2021, Maud – who is Prince Michael of Kent’s granddaughter – was also the first royal to be born in the US.

The couple, who are also parents to nine-year-old Isabella, welcomed Maud while living in Los Angeles. Despite being born in America, she was later christened at the Royal Chapel at St. James’s Palace. Maud, who is 12 today, shares her birthday with Princess Anne – who is celebrating her 75th birthday today.

When she was born, Maud was 42nd in line to the throne. But now, following the births of many other royals since August 2013, she is sits at 50th in line.

After Maud was born, but before their second daughter was born, the family moved home from the US and settled back in London.

Previously opening up about their daughter’s name, Lord Frederick shared that they had named her after a past royal. He said: “We liked the idea of an old-fashioned English name and there are a couple of Princess Mauds in my father’s family from a hundred years ago.

“One was the youngest daughter of Edward VII who ended up being Queen of Norway, and another a grand-daughter of Edward VII by his daughter Princess Louise.”

Speaking to HELLO! back in 2013, Lord Frederick added of her middle names: “It’s also a beautiful, elegant name and it was always our first choice. Elizabeth is a tribute to the Queen, Daphne is Sophie’s grandmother, who she was very close to and Marina is my paternal grandmother.”

Being only a month younger than Prince William’s eldest son, Maud later started school with Prince George at Thomas’ Battersea.

Aged just five, she acted as a bridesmaid at Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s wedding in October 2018.

The following year, in 2019, Maud was one of the bridesmaids at the wedding for her aunt, Lady Gabriella, known as Ella, and her late husband, Thomas Kingston.
