After the LA fires caused a delay, the 2025 Oscars nominations were finally announced this morning. Emilia Pérez, a musical about a drug lord’s journey to becoming a transgender woman leads with a record 13 nominations for a film not in the English language. Just behind on 10 nominations is Wicked: Part One and also The Brutalist, an almost 4 hour epic about the immigrant experience, which is the bookies’ favourite for the biggest awards. Meanwhile, Papal thriller Conclave and Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown follow on eight nods.
Hollywood’s biggest swipe at the re-election of Donald Trump is a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Sebastian Stan in The Apprentice, which follows the 45th and 47th president in his early career in 1970s New York. No major studio would touch the controversial independent film at the time, which features a scene of the future Commander-in-Chief raping his first wife Ivana. She accused him of rape when they were divorcing in 1990 but later distanced herself from this claim which Trump – who lashed out at the film – strongly denies.
Among the biggest snubs this year were Gladiator II’s Denzel Washington, Queer’s Daniel Craig, Maria’s Angelina Jolie and The Last Showgirl’s Pamela Anderson. The full list of the 2025 Academy Awards nominations is below.
