Large orchids are the pride of many British homeowners who base their floral displays around these colourful and vibrant blooms.
However, it can be quite tricky to take care of this cherished plant while helping its flowers grow to an impressive size.
Because they are native to tropical climates, they thrive on a delicate balance of light and humidity to produce their stunning blooms.
In many homes where these ornamental plants are often displayed on mantels, it’s the up to the owner to recreate these ideal conditions.
Thankfully, an orchid enthusiast has discovered a simple method to encourage growth, using coffee as a natural source of essential nutrients.
Speaking on the Garden Orchid YouTube channel, the expert explained: “In today’s video I’ll share how to take care of orchids to help them develop. [This method] helps orchids flower very large and have brilliant colours.”
They also mentioned that “flowers can be kept on branches for up to six months”. The plant enthusiast said: “The flowers bloom one after the other [with] many buds growing on the same tree.”
For optimal results, the expert suggests combining two teaspoons of ground coffee with 400ml of hot water in a measuring cup.
“Coffee contains a lot of protein, potassium magnesium, and is especially rich in potassium to help plants grow from roots to flowers,” the YouTuber highlighted.
After stirring the mixture, it should be strained through cheesecloth to remove any coffee grounds.
The resulting liquid will be a dark orange, relatively clear solution. At this point, roughly 1.6litres of fresh water should be added.
To keep pests at bay and prevent fungal issues, the guru advises soaking a cotton pad in the solution and wiping both the top and underside of the orchid’s leaves.
This technique not only repels insects but also helps safeguard the foliage, a common concern for orchid lovers.
The expert continues: “This will [provide] the leaves with the most complete vitamins and nutrients.
“[If] you do this once a week [the] leaves will always be green and healthy.”
