One TikTok influencer, SoilPhu – who has gained more than 191,000 followers on TikTok – shared a houseplant tip for encouraging an orchid to bloom. Orchids that have been kept for a long time, and will not bloom, are said to be stressed out by being watered with tap water.
“Today, I will teach you a tip to make orchids bloom,” the influencer stated, showcasing how to make the magical flower-promoting water solution. Take chopped ginger, a spoonful of sugar, two drops of white vinegar and 500ml of water. “Spray it on the roots and leave,” the influencer instructed. “And, in no time, the orchid will bloom.”
But wise commentators were quick to point out that the flower in the video was a clivia, and not an orchid.
“That is not an orchid!” one TikTok commentator pointed out. “That is a clivia, not [an] orchid,” another added.
How to make an orchid bloom
While not all social media influencers can be relied upon to give the correct information, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) can be trusted.
Founded in 1804, the UK’s leading gardening charity is one of the best places to find out how to look after plants.
In terms of encouraging an orchid to bloom – and, most specifically, a moth orchid – a simple pot relocation could be all that it needs.
“Move the plant to a slightly cooler location, with a temperature about 5C lower, for a month or so,” the charity stated. “This should stimulate flowering.”
This will only work, however, if the plant is primed with the best growing conditions.
Orchids will require watering during its growing season (which is now), but the plant should never be left to sit in excess water.
“Ideally use tepid water, preferably rainwater,” the RHS added, noting that the plant’s leaves shouldn’t get yet.
Although, light misting all over the plant is encouraged to increase humidity.
“Correct watering is vital to ensure moth orchids stay healthy,” the charity emphasised.
