One overlooked car part fitted on every UK car that could hit drivers with £1k fine

One overlooked car part fitted on every vehicle in the UK could put drivers at risk of four-figure fines and penalties, experts have warned. Specialists at JTAPE revealed the importance of making sure that car wing mirrors are properly secure and working before setting off on their journeys.

Driving without a wing mirror is against the rules as motorists are unable to properly see the roads and any hazards. Chris Jevons, Car Repair JTAPE explained that wing mirror neglect is a growing problem in Autumn and Winter. Chris said: “Driving without a wing mirror is illegal depending on which one is missing.

“The law requires cars to have at least two fully working rear-view mirrors, one of which must be on the driver’s side wing mirror. Fines start at £100 but can rise to £1,000 if taken to court, alongside penalty points.”

However, the RAC claims that road users could be hit with even higher fees if they are considered to be using a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

This comes with a higher penalty, meaning motorists may face a £2,500 fine and up to three penalty points on their driving licence.

The RAC explained: “Wing mirrors play an important role in keeping us safe. They allow drivers to see other road users behind them without having to turn their heads, but it’s their position at the side of cars that makes them vulnerable to damage.”

ATS Euromaster said motorists who notice their wing mirrors are damaged should immediately check if the glass, housing or the whole unit needs to be replaced.

Minor issues like small cracks can be fixed by just replacing the glass. However, more severe damage may require more specialist repair work. Road users have also been urged to check their insurance coverage, with some policies offering coverage for wing mirror repairs and replacements.

ATS Euromaster added: “Vehicles must have at least two working mirrors that give a clear view of the road behind. Damaged or missing mirrors can get you fined, penalty points and MOT failure. Always repair wing mirror damage asap to comply with the law and stay safe on the road.

“By fixing your wing mirror issues quickly and meeting the legal requirements, you can avoid the fine and stay safe on the road for yourself and others.”
