A gorgeously scenic road trip here in the UK has recently been named as one of the best in the world thanks to the amount of attractions that it boasts.

There’s truly nothing better than piling in the car and taking a road trip to see some sights, soak up the culture and visit multiple different spots in a certain area.

So if it’s on your list of travel goals for 2025 to finally take that journey you’ve been dreaming of, you won’t have to venture overseas to experience one of the very best that the world has to offer.

And for those of us who like a bit of action and adventure during a trip, it’s good news – as this route has some of the most impressive sights, including several castles and even a battle ground.

The Highland Tourist Route in Scotland was recognised in new research from InsureandGo that revealed which of the world’s most famous road trips offers the most action per mile.

The study calculated the number of relevant tourist attractions dotted along each route using an online route planner and divided it by the overall length of the trip itself, to determine which ones offer the highest density of attractions, and as such can be crowned as the most action-packed adventures of all.

And one of the very best in the world was the Highland route in Scotland, which takes drivers on a scenic journey from Aberdeen to Inverness, or vice versa.

116 miles in length, this drive is an absolute must for any history buffs, as you’ll be able to spot an impressive four castles along the way and even a historic battleground.

Inverness, known as the capital of the Highlands, has a vibrant cultural scene and serves as a gateway to the world-famous Loch Ness.

Ancient castles, whisky distilleries and plenty of glistening lochs showcase some of Scotland’s stunning scenery and culture.

Among these must-see spots include Culloden Battlefield – site of bloody final battle of the Jacobite Rising – Fort George and Cawdor Castle, made famous in the Shakespeare play Macbeth.

The midway point of the road trip, which takes around three hours in total, takes you through Speyside – and if you’re a fan of whiskey then there are a few stops you’ll want to make.

Here you’ll find the famous Glenlivet Distillery, the oldest legal distillery in the Highlands and famed for producing Scotch single malt.

The Cairngorm mountain area is also well worth exploring thanks to its beautiful unspoilt rugged look that makes for a very scenic drive.

And finally, you can’t forget about Aberdeen, where the route ends – or begins if you’re doing the opposite journey.

The so-called ‘Granite City’ is steeped in a rich history and culture with distinctive architecture built from local granite stone.

The final road trip stops along the way are the Grampian Transport Museum, Pitfichie Forest and Gordon Highlanders Museum, so once you’re done checking these out, it’s worth taking some time to explore Aberdeen.

There are plenty of beautiful parks and gardens, art galleries, a large beach and an array of independent shops, cafes and restaurants – so there’s really something that everybody will love.
