One of the best World War 2 films has just been added to ITVX.

Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson, tells the true story of Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II.

The film follows Doss (Andrew Garfield), a devout Seventh-day Adventist, who enlists in the army with the intention of serving as a medic, refusing to carry or use a weapon.

His unwavering commitment to his beliefs leads to tension with his fellow soldiers and commanding officers. Despite these challenges, Doss proves his bravery when he saves 75 men during one of the most brutal battles of the war, without ever firing a shot.

Hacksaw Ridge was praised for its intense, realistic portrayal of the violence and chaos of war, particularly the Battle of Okinawa.

The film was directed by Mel Gibson, who had previously achieved success with Braveheart (1995). It marked his return to directing after a ten-year hiatus. Its screenplay was written by Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight, and it was produced by Bill Mechanic, David Permut, and Bruce Davey.

The film received widespread critical acclaim upon release, particularly for its performances and its depiction of Doss’ courage, and earned a 84% score on movie reviewing platform Rotten Tomatoes.

Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Desmond Doss earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the Academy Awards, while the film itself was nominated for six Oscars. It won two, for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

In addition to its Academy Award wins, Hacksaw Ridge was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama and won a BAFTA Award for Best Editing. It grossed over $175 million worldwide against a production budget of $40 million, making it a financial success as well.

Hacksaw Ridge also delves into themes of faith, moral conviction, and the personal costs of war. Doss’ story is not only one of courage in the face of battle but also a reflection on the power of personal integrity and the ability to stand firm in one’s beliefs despite opposition.

Hacksaw Ridge is now available for streaming on ITVX.
