One of the best British comedy films ever made is streaming on NOW

If you’re in the mood for a dark, razor-sharp British comedy, look no further: The Death of Stalin, the 2017 satirical masterpiece from Armando Iannucci, is now available to stream on NOW. This critically acclaimed film is a blend of sharp wit, absurd humor, and biting political commentary, making it one of the best British comedies of the last decade.

Set in the chaotic aftermath of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin’s sudden death in 1953, The Death of Stalin follows the power struggle among Stalin’s inner circle as they vie for control of the Soviet Union. The story’s premise might sound grim, but Iannucci’s distinct sense of humor ensures that the events, although rooted in real history, are presented with a satirical twist that keeps the audience both entertained and captivated.

While the subject matter might seem heavy, Iannucci, known for his work on The Thick of It and Veep, brings his trademark brand of dark humor to the story. The film offers a comedic yet scathing critique of political machinations, poking fun at the way power is acquired and maintained in the most absurd of circumstances. The characters, many of whom are based on real figures, navigate the turbulent waters of Soviet politics, and the humor emerges from their exaggerated incompetence and ruthless ambition.

One of the film’s most significant strengths is how it blends historical events with a satirical narrative. By not sticking rigidly to the historical record, Iannucci allows for a level of comedic freedom while still capturing the essence of the power struggles and absurdities that followed Stalin’s death.

Leading the cast is Steve Buscemi as Nikita Khrushchev, the cunning and pragmatic politician who finds himself navigating the treacherous waters of Soviet politics. Khrushchev must contend with the equally ambitious and often incompetent members of Stalin’s cabinet, and Buscemi’s portrayal captures both the character’s vulnerability and sharp-witted resolve.

Simon Russell Beale portrays the grotesque Lavrentiy Beria, the head of the Soviet secret police, a man who is as terrifying as he is pompous. Beale delivers a chilling yet darkly comedic performance, balancing Beria’s cruel actions with his absurd sense of self-importance.

Jeffrey Tambor plays Georgy Malenkov, the Soviet Premier, who must attempt to maintain some semblance of control after Stalin’s death. His portrayal is both comical and tragic, as Malenkov is swept up in a power struggle he cannot possibly understand or manage.

The film’s characters, all vying for dominance in the wake of Stalin’s death, reveal the petty, self-serving nature of political ambitions. In doing so, Iannucci creates a narrative that is as comedic as it is deeply cynical, highlighting the absurdity of politics even in the most oppressive systems.

The Death of Stalin received widespread critical acclaim upon its release, earning comparisons to Armando Iannucci’s earlier works like The Thick of It and Veep. It garnered several accolades, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and was recognized by various critics’ groups for its outstanding ensemble cast and clever script.

Dark comedy gem The Death of Stalin is now available for streaming on NOW.
