A pretty European country has been given a Foreign Office terror warning despite being one of the safest in the continent.
According to recent updates, there have been warnings from travel advisories that Croatia could potentially be targeted by terrorists.
Recognised for its breathtaking Adriatic coastline, deep-rooted history, and cultural diversity, Croatia stands out as a gem in Southeast Europe.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has alerted: “Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Croatia, attacks cannot be ruled out. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners.”
The FCDO added: “There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.”
However, Darijo Saric, CEO of VIP Holiday Booker, explained that Croatia is actually renowned for its safety. It was also named the 10th safest country in Europe by the World Population Review.
He said: “Croatia is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in Europe, particularly when it comes to the threat of terrorism.
“One of Croatia’s most significant achievements in safety is that it has not recorded a single terrorist attack in over three decades.
“This spotless record is rare in Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean region, where other nations have faced incidents linked to extremism or separatist movements.
“Croatia’s ability to remain free of such events is a testament to its effective security measures and low-profile geopolitical position.”
Yet, it’s crucial for Brits to check the FCDO’s latest travel advice before jetting off. Up-to-date information regarding alerts and insurance, entry rules, security, health and available assistance can be found therein.
While holidaymakers should note that Croatia generally experiences “low” crime rates and violent incidents are “rare”, it is still imperative to remain vigilant.
The FCDO has cautioned travellers specifically about overcharging in certain “gentlemen’s clubs” where individuals have faced extortionate fees, sometimes amounting to thousands of euros, and confrontations if payments are declined.
The FCDO added: “Pickpockets operate in tourist areas. Avoid carrying large sums of cash, do not leave valuables unattended and use hotel safes if possible.”
Equally concerning are reports which have addressed occurrences of sexual assaults taking place in taxis in Croatia.
